Allow dictation users to not send transcripts of their dictation to Microsoft
At present, if someone has to dictate to their computer when typing, there are two options through Windows: the older, offline speech recognition service, which doesn't always work well; or the newer Cortana and Dictation modes, which tend to be much more accurate. However, with these newer, better speech recognition modes, Microsoft receives transcripts of every command given and from what I can tell, keeps it all unless the user goes in and deletes it.
This presents a privacy issue that I and probably plenty of other people take issue with: I am not okay with allowing other people to see every command I give. Most of what I use these services for is dictation of creative writing, at which point the lack of accuracy in the earlier speech recognition tool becomes a major pain. But the only setting currently that would prevent all of this data from being sent and kept by Microsoft also disables all the online speech recognition, Cortana and Dictation modes included. As a result, the only option for a speech recognition user who wants a modicum of privacy in their dictation is to use the older, much more error-prone speech recognition service; or to ignore (in my case) worsening hand injuries and type manually anyway.
To improve, my suggestions are that you either come up with a more concrete policy ensuring the privacy of dictated information, such as deleting the transcripts automatically after a certain amount of time; or provide an option where users can still use these cloud-based services even if they decline to allow past commands to be stored in the cloud.
The cloud-based dictation services work much better than the offline one, and I would love to be able to use them. But I am not willing to allow anyone to keep every word I write on record, even anonymized, and I'm certain I am not the only one. We would all greatly appreciate it if you could work to get speech recognition up to the same levels of privacy as most other Microsoft features and products.
Thank you for your time.
