  1. Add a command or toggle to disable Narrator speech and sounds.

There needs to be a way to disable Narrator speech and/or sounds. This is especially true now that we have braille support. Currently, I have to mute the entire system to have a silent braille experience.

      Hi Chris,

We do have a hot key to turn on and off Narrator. If you use the Windows Key and Enter, that should turn on and off Narrator.

One clarifying question that I have though is are you using Narrator with the braille device, or are you using the device separately?

      Thank you,

The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk team.

    • Change Outlook color schemes

The color scheme in Outlook 2016 does not provide enough contrast for some features, such as highlighting out of office or busy days. This is especially true for the "dark grey" office theme - where the ooo days show up as a whiter shade against a light grey background - impossible to see in the month view. Getting away from the pastel colors would help.

        Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us at the Disability Answer Desk. This is something that we are currently working on and investigating solutions to improve contrast themes in our software. Our Project Managers are aware of this and we will get back to you as soon as there are more details available.

Again, thank you for reaching out to us. And if in the future, you have further issues, questions, or comments, please let us know.

        Sincerely,

The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk Team.

      • Different notification sounds for different apps

In the Windows Mobile version, you can assign completely different sounds to different apps. I would like that be made for the PC version. I can tell what notification would be by the sound. For my phone, I have different sounds for different types of things. For example, "You have an appointment." for the calendar. For mail, "New mail" and for Maintenance and Security, an alarm sound.

          Hello,

This sis a very interesting idea you’ve proposed. In Windows some apps let you customize alerts for some of their functions, but not all becuase it’s dependant on registry entries.

I’ll go ahead and forward this to the product manager for further review and get back to you with any further updates.

Thanks again for reaching out to us; and in the future, if there’s anything else we can do for you, please let us know.

          Sincerely,

The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk team.

It would be great to be able to use the new hotkeys such as SpaceBar with C or Spacebar with I while still focussed in the list of suggestions. Having to tab away from the list to use these hotkeys is a real productivity killer, because, often the correct suggestion is third or fourth in the list, so we need to be able to use those hotkeys while focussed in the list of suggestions. Thanks.

          • Add how-to's on your PowerPoint support pages for math and animation accessibility

At work we're picking up bits and pieces all over the web about the best way to make PowerPoints accessible-- specifically for math, tables and animations. We're currently getting some info from MathType/Design Science but this could be on the support pages. We're finding that
            - MathML is good BUT
            - there's an option to add alt text, some users are requesting it, others are saying it shouldn't be added to the Math OLE (turns out it seems to depend on screen reader)
            - Animations where a user action adds more bits of math to a single slide-- can't consistently…

              Hello Mallory,

This is a very good idea, and thank you so much for breaking down the details of what you’re looking for in reference to this issue. That helps us a great deal in investigating how we can make that feature more accessible.

We’ll do some more research to see how these solutions can be implemented and will get back to you with follow-up details as they become available.

Again, thank you for reaching out to us; and if in the future we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

              Sincerely,

The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk team.

            • Please provide tips on using Pivot tables in Excel with screen readers. Pivot tables are one of the most powerful features in Excel.

Pivot tables provide a superb feature set for analyzing data without having to develop complex formulae involving many ranges of data. I use a screen reader and am just starting to learn about them and am finding them wonderful, fascinating, and extremely useful. Sadly, screen reader vendors provide no information on pivot table use, and I believe that their lack of use by blind individuals stems from the fact that blind people don't learn about them, so they are never used. I think Microsoft has a wonderful opportunity here to expose information about one of the unsung heroes of Excel,…

                Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us about this issue. Another unother user has approached us about this very same situation, and we are having our engineering teams look into this.

Thank you for contacting us, and if there is anything else that we can be assistance with in the future, don’t hesitate to let us know.

                Sincerely,

              • Improve contrast/color schemes for Microsoft Office 2010 and newer

The ribbon menus need another option that provides more contrast and easier to see icons for Low-Vision users. The current shades of gray, and small size are very frustrating for our low-vision students. We really miss the Office 2003 menu styles and color schemes which provided greater contrast.

                  Hi Cheryl,

Thank you for contacting us at the disability Answer Desk with this concern. We are currently tacking this concern as it’s been brought up concerning some of our other products. In the meantime, we are following up with our Product Managers to get an ETA of when a solution will be implemented. When we receive more information, we will post it here first.

Thank you again for reaching out to us for your accessibility related concerns.

                  Sincerely,

The Microsoft Disability Answer desk Team.

                    Hello Matt,

Thank you for contacting us about your suggestion. In a way that makes sense to have a screen curtain for your Android device like the one that is found in Apple products.

I’ve submitted your feature request to one of our Product Managers for further review. we’ll post updates here as soon as further details become available.

In the meantime, one thing you can do is dim your screen all the way down as that would make it harder for others to read – especially at an angle.

Again, thank you for contacting us about this, and we will endeavor to resolve all issues that are raised.

                    Sincerely,

                  • Improve magnification - make it more Apple like

Would be great to have similar magnifying features like there are in mac os x:
                    - GPU enhanced magnification (not only in full screen mode) to make everything more smooth.
                    - Make desktop scrollable rather than reducing the space in "docked mode".
                    - Add an option to center the mouse in the zoom area (full screen mode).
                    - Add a shortcut to quickly enable/disable zoom without having to close magnify.exe.
                    - Dual monitor support:
                    - desktop expansion
                    - clone (zoomed)
                    - clone (1x - with no zoom)

                        • Add an Outlook profile flag for users who need accessible e-mails

Allow users to self identify via their Outlook/Exchange profile that they need accessible e-mail sent to them.
This would notify senders when the receiver has flagged that they need to receive e-mail in an accessible format and would prompt the sender to run the accessibility checker on their message and attachments before sending the message to the receiver who self identified via their profile.

                            Hi Cory,

This is an interesting suggestion in that it does make sense to alert the recipient of the fact that a disabled person is emailing them and needs some compensation to see a replied email. The tricky thing is that not all users use Microsoft products for email correspondence. Thus iin order to make this universal, there may have to be something implemented into the email protocols such as IMAP, SMTP or POP protocols.

However, this will be forwarded to the appropriate project manager to get additional feedback on this suggestion.

Thank you for reaching out to us; and if you have any further issues or suggestions related to accessibility, please let us know.

                            Sincerely,

The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk Team.

I can't differentiate between an Available Slot and Tentative one when I access Calendar on the Outlook 2016; have to set theme to Black as workaround, but that makes working on Outlook Calendar worse. I have to strain my eyes day in and out for differentiating colors; even though I'm colorblind, can someone help me please !

When using capslock up and down arrows, there are some items in the list that I don't use. It would be helpful if there was a settings screen with a list of all the elements that could be toggled on or off. This would declutter the list and make it easier to use by removing rarely used commands. I'd personally use this to remove such things as landmarks as I never use that navigation setting.

                                Hello Chris,

Thank you for reaching out to us at the Disability ANswer Desk on the User Voice Forum. This is an interesting feature request and makes a lot of sense considering that verbosity settings are found on comparable products. I will contact the product manager for Narrator and follow up with him to see if this is something that is planned for a future release. Once I have an answer back, I’ll follow up with an update with regards to your suggestion.

Thank you again for contacting us about this.

                                Sincerely,

The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk team.

I find ALL on-screen animation makes me physically nauseous, so turning ALL animation off is extremely important to me.
Erin Williams in CELA tells me that it is not currently possible to switch off the animation in HoverCards in SharePoint OnPrem 2016: which makes the product unusable for me. Please make disabling animation in SharePoint a GLOBAL and USER SELECTABLE (i.e. not IT department) option.
And: can Microsoft PLEASE STOP animating everything in every app "because we can?" Edge is now unusable because of that, also large portions of Windows10. Animation, so-called "smooth" scrolling, and similar abominations are NOT "cool"…

First off add multiple monitor support. Currently, when you hit the Ink Workspace button, the app will only open on your 'main' monitor. There seems to be no way to sketch on anything on the second monitor connected. You can do this with the Snipping Tool provided by Windows so why use Ink Workspace???

2nd, please add the ability to adjust the ruler without touch support? Maybe I'm missing something but I cant seem to figure out how to move the ruler from its initial position. I am guessing you need to use multi-touch gestures to maneuver the ruler which…

                                      Hi Neil,

Thank you for reaching out to us about your suggestion. In order to help you out further, what operating system and application are you wanting to use the math OCR capability with? Is this to be used with any adaptive technologies like Narrator, Jaws, dolphin, etc.? This would help me do some additional research for you and get this suggestion in front of the right engineering team.

Again, thank you for contacting us; and if we can be of help in the future, please don’t hesitate to post again.

                                      Sincerely,

The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk team.

                                        Hello Hari Dhoundiyal ,

Thank you for contacting the Disability Answer Desk about your concern with Narrator. Can you give us some more detail as to when it does not alternate in between screen and editing mode? This would help us improve the software to make it user friendly.

                                        Thank you for contacting us.

With Jaws under windows 10, there is a known bug with how Windows is reporting colors to jaws not allowing Jaws users to assign screen highlights reliably like we were able to do in windows 7. Freedom scientific states that they are working with you guys on this issue, but are still waiting for MS to provide a fix. For those of us who are using screen readers, windows 7 provides more reliable accessibility then windows 10. I am hopeful that MS will work with the developers of screen readers to provide better accessibility in Windows 10 with screen readers…

                                          Hello Gian,

Thank you for reachingout to us about this issue. After doing some preliminary investigation, we could not find the issue refrenced as being passed to us by freedom Scientific. Therefore we need more details.

Can you provide us with the environment you’re using, JASWS version, Windows Version, Applicaion you’re finding this bug most with, and steps to reproduce the problem? THis would be a help inresolving your issue as soon as possible.

                                          Thank you,

When navigating the calendar in Outlook 2016 recent builds, the screen reader will announce the dates, but not the actual day of the week. JAWS used to do this before they switched to providing the information directly from outlook.

                                            Hi Jason,

Thank you for contacting us at the Disability Answer Desk. In order to serve you better, can you tell us what version of Outlook you’re using such as Mac or Windows 32 or 64-bit, and what version of Jaws or other screen reader that you are using? That will allow us to get this issue to the appropriate product manager to get this resolved for you.

Again, thank you for contacting us; and we will do our best to resolve this for you.

                                            Sincerely,

The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk team.
