to use a screen reader with skype efficiently follow this
Start Skype automatically when you start Windows
In Skype, press Ctrl+comma sign (,) to open the Settings dialog. Press the Tab key until you hear “General,” and then press Enter.
Press the Tab key until you hear “Automatically start Skype.”
Press Spacebar to change the value. With NVDA, you hear “On” or "Off."
To close the Settings dialog, press the Escape (Esc) key.
Make and answer a call
In the Skype main window, press the Tab key until you hear "People, groups and messages." Press Enter.
Type the person's name, address, or phone number. The search is performed while you type.
To move to the list of results, press the Tab key repeatedly until you hear the first result. If there are more results, browse the list using the Down and Up arrow keys. The screen reader announces the contacts as you move. To select a person, press Enter.
When trying to access the result list, if no results are found for a name or address, you will hear "Invite to Skype". Press Enter to send an invitation. If no results are found for a phone number, you will hear "Call number" and can press Enter to make the call.
To start or answer an audio call, press Ctrl+Shift+P.
To start a video call or toggle video on or off, press Ctrl+Shift+K. You will hear "video on" or "video off".
To hang up the call, press Ctrl+E.
Chat via IM
In the Skype main window, press the Tab key until you hear "People, groups and messages." Press Enter.

Fix skype freezing issue
Update Skype
The first thing you should do when your Skype keeps crashing is updating the application. Compatibility issues can come up if you’re using an older version of Skype.Here’s how to update Skype on Windows 10:
Launch Skype.

Click on the three dots next to your profile information.
Click on Settings.
From the menu on the left, click Help & Feedback.

Skype will automatically check for updates. If a new version is available, you can click the Update button to get it.

Wait for the Skype installer to open. The installation should be an automatic process.
When the installation is complete, Skype will re-launch itself. You can navigate back to the Help & Feedback tab to check if your Skype is up to date.

Windows 10 comes with a built-in troubleshooter which can help you fix general issues on your system. Sometimes running this troubleshooter will fix app-related errors such as Skype crashing.To run the Windows 10 troubleshooter, follow these steps:
Open the Settings app by pressing down the Windows and I keys on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can launch Settings from the Start menu.

Scroll down and click on Windows Store Apps to enter the expanded view.
Click the Run the troubleshooter button.

Workarounds:
A) Alt + F4 (closes the window)
B) Close the window using the X in the top right corner
C) Right-click on Teams in the taskbar and close the window
